Alloy Development

Capability Overview

ORNL researchers develop improved alloys for energy applications by improving our understanding of processing-structure-property relationships.

Alloy development activities at ORNL find solutions to pressing problems in energy generation and utilization where alloy performance is the bottleneck. Our approach to alloy development involves the application of physical metallurgy principles. Alloy processing, microstructure characterization and mechanical (and other) property testing are all performed to understand their interrelationships and are often supplemented with computational approaches.

Equipment & Facilities

  • Alloy synthesis
  • Alloy characterization, including mechanical property testing
  • Custom powder production and small-scale 3D printing
