Bridging Two Worlds: Introducing the Software Engineering and Scientific Computing Department

Abstract

Scientific discovery increasingly depends on computing and software. Yet the practices used to develop scientific software often differ markedly from those in professional software engineering. To help bridge this gap, IEEE Computing in Science & Engineering (CiSE) is merging its existing Software Engineering and Scientific Programming departments into a unified department, Software Engineering and Scientific Computing, devoted to exploring how engineering principles, methods, and tools can strengthen the quality, sustainability, and impact of scientific computing and software. This article introduces the motivation, scope, and goals of the new department and invites the community to contribute insights and experiences from across domains.
