Abstract

The issueofthermalmanagementoftwocomponentsslidingagainsteachotherplaysanimportantrole in theproperfunctioningofthemachinecomponents.Jaeger,usinghisandBlok’shypotheses, presented thecurvestocomputetheaverageandthemaximumtemperatureriseinsquareandband shaped interfaces.Itisoftenobservedthatdesignersrefertothosecurveseveninscenarioswhenthe contactgeometryisdifferent.Inmanycases,amoreaccuratetemperaturedistributionisneededand using aconstantheatpartitiontoevaluatethetemperatureriseattheinterfacecanleadtoover-design or under-designofthecomponents.Inthisstudytheauthorsapplyarecentlydevelopedmethodology of obtainingthetemperaturedistributionattheinterfaceoftwoslidingsemi-infinitebodiesby partitioningtheheatbetweentheminsuchawaythatthetemperatureateverypointintheinterfaceis same forboththebodies.Ellipticalcontactswithasemi-ellipsoidalheatdistributionareconsidered.In order toaiddesigners,curvefitequationsarepresentedtocalculatemaximumtemperatureandaverage temperatureriseinnon-dimensionalformoverawiderangeofPecletnumbers,thermalconductivity ratios andellipticityratios.
