A Zymomonas Mobilis Structural Gene Confers Tolerance to Sodium Acetate

This invention describes nucleic acid sequence, genetics and gene expression data that identifies a Zymomonas mobilis ZM4 (ZM4) locus able to confer increased acetate tolerance in this bacterium. ZM4 strains were created that over-expressed the gene from a plasmid and by construction of a chromosomal deletion. The phenotypes of these respective strains and control strains confirms the locus confers increased acetate tolerance in Z. mobilis. The conservation of this protein among different microbial species may indicate a similar role in other species that could be manipulated for inhibitor tolerance in other industrial strains.
