UV Photodecomposition Standoff Infrared Spectroscopy

This invention is a new method for the detection of molecules on a surface at a distance. It combines ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) spectroscopic techniques using standoff detection. A surface is scanned with a tunable IR source. The surface is then exposed to UV light of a particular wavelength which induces photodecomposition of any target residue on the surface. After UV exposure, the surface is again irradiated with the tunable IR source. The IR spectral signatures before and after UV exposure are compared to produce a distinct identification of the target residues on the surface.
