Transparent Omniphobicity Enabled by Spinodally Phase Separated Glass Thin Films

This invention relates to development of robust transparent surfaces that repels wide variety of liquids, prevents staining and is capable of self-healing. This is accomplished by combining various aspects of ORNL’s superhydrophobic coatings technology with off the shelf touch screen glasses(like Corning’s gorilla glass) to make an optically clear, rugged and durable optical thin film that exhibits omniphobic properties. Such a optical thin films have obvious commercial applications in many areas, from optical windows to biomedical devices to fluid transport systems, and more.
