Handheld Inherently-Directional Neutron Detector

The invention relates to detection of neutron sources and more specifically to a hand-held neutron detector. Special Nuclear Materials (SNM) and radioactive sources, many of which emit neutrons, are a concern for a wide variety of organizations and programs, from Homeland Security to health physics to nuclear power. The ability to detect such materials in the field, through the use of portable neutron detectors, is thus a practical and pressing need across the country. This handheld, directional neutron detector allows the user to locate neutron sources in the field and discriminate them from other types of sources. A directional response allows users to pinpoint neutron sources.
