High Voltage Window Electrolyte for Supercapacitors

The invention is directed to high voltage electrolytes for supercapacitors. A supercapacitor and an electrolyte composition for use in a supercapacitor are described herein. The supercapacitor includes a negative carbon electrode having a current collector, a positive carbon electrode having a current collector, an ion-permeable separator disposed between the negative and positive electrodes, and an electrolyte composition disposed between the negative and positive electrodes. A new combination of solvent and salt compositions is stable up to 4V electrochemical window. A prototype was successfully tested on an ORNL-developed carbon and binder.
