Waste Tire-Derived Carbon Supports for Oxygen Reduction Catalysts

Here, we present a new method to fabricate carbon-based supports for electrocatalysis using waste tires. Using the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) as an example, we loaded each carbon with Pt cubes and evaluated the resulting ORR activity. We show that the Pt nanocubes loaded on tire carbon that was activated holds similar catalytic performance to that of Pt nanocubes loaded on commercial carbon (Ketjen-300). This work represents the first to report tire-derived carbon supports for electrocatalysis.
