Due to the low-cost and earth abundant features of sodium against lithium, sodium-ion batteries have become a cost-effective energy storage system comparing to lithium-ion batteries. Among all types of cathode materials, transition metal layered oxide materials stand out in the sodium-ion battery field due to their high energy density. Currently reported methods for synthesizing these materials always involve energy-intensive powder-mixing process and/or lengthy rinsing steps, which increased the material cost. In addition, the resulted materials often end up with inhomogeneous morphology and impurities after high temperature annealing. As a result, the practical capacities of these materials are far from their theoretical values. Thus, to improve the electrochemical performance of these materials and scale-up the production, the invention provides a synthesis method that enables facile scalability, high homogeneity, high crystallinity, and less impurity of the synthesized materials.
