This solid-state thermal switch can significantly increase the functions of the thermal mass in buildings by actively controlling the thermal resistivity of insulation layers to optimize the energy storage and utilization to shed, shift, and shape HVAC loads on demand. Simulations indicate the potential to reduce annual HVAC energy use by up to 70% and that these could be increased with advanced controls.
