Securing critical assets

The more technologically advanced and connected our world gets, the more we introduce cyber vulnerabilities into our national critical infrastructures. ORNL researchers are identifying and characterizing our nation’s adversaries, enabling resilient operation of critical systems in the face of cyber attacks, and helping analysts process multi-modal data streams to more efficiently understand threats and inform mission-driven response actions.

Cyber Research at ORNL Fact Sheet

Researchers create a cyber edge

Our cyber researchers are actively engaged in efforts to increase the number and diversity of skilled workers to address the multitude of growing cyber-physical challenges in our economy and national security infrastructure. Join our team to secure our nation’s most critical assets.

Energy infrastructure

The US energy grid delivers more than 1 million megawatts of power across more than 600,000 miles of transmission lines. Our researchers are developing novel scientific methods, tools, and visualizations to mitigate cyber-physical risks to the security, resilience, and operation of the nation’s energy infrastructure.

Transportation systems

We’re uncovering cyber vulnerabilities within increasingly digital and interconnected vehicle components — and developing scientific solutions to prevent cyber-based attacks on individual vehicles or transportation systems. Collaborations among cyber-physical and nuclear nonproliferation researchers are delivering next-generation improvements in the security of nuclear and radiological materials during their transportation.

Manufacturing technologies

In conjunction with advanced manufacturing research and the development of a manufacturing ‘digital thread,’ we’re advancing methods to evaluate and secure the materials, processes, components, and systems that comprise the US manufacturing industrial base.
