ORNL provides short- and long-term research programs for either faculty or faculty-student teams to collaborate with world-class science and engineering mentors. The length of the faculty programs vary from summer internships to year-long sabbaticals, but all programs enable faculty members to broaden their professional outlook beyond the classroom with authentic research opportunities.
Department of Energy Visiting Faculty Program
ORNL participates in the Department of Energy Visiting Faculty Program (VFP). The program is sponsored and managed by the DOE Office of Science’s Office of Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists (WDTS) in collaboration with the DOE National Laboratories. The program seeks to increase the research competitiveness of faculty members and their students at institutions historically underrepresented in the research community in order to expand the workforce vital to DOE’s mission.
The Visiting Scholars at ORNL (VSO) program provides opportunities for learning and professional development through structured, short-term appointments at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The program is intended for individuals who seek to gain exposure to ORNL’s world-class research facilities, scientific expertise, and mission-driven environment, including postdoctoral fellows, secondary and postsecondary educators and academic faculty, established scientists and engineers, and other professionals.
Each year, more than 3,200 scientists from universities, laboratories and private industry around the world conduct experiments at ORNL’s scientific facilities. ORNL offers a diverse set of tools for experiments across a range of fields, including biology, materials and energy sciences, physics, engineering, and chemistry.
Access to ORNL facilities is through the review and approval of user proposals, and depends on the scientific merit, suitability of the user facilities, and the appropriateness of the work to DOE objectives.
