Research Symposium
The annual ORPA Research Symposium gives early-career researchers a forum to present their work, exchange ideas across disciplines, and connect with researchers and leaders from ORNL and partner organizations. ORPA postdocs help plan and lead the event in collaboration with the Office of Research Education and laboratory partners.
Seminars and Leadership Panels
Seminars, lectures, and technical discussions across ORNL connect early-career researchers with new ideas, perspectives, and expertise. Events featuring Corporate Fellows, visiting speakers, and other laboratory leaders offer opportunities to explore research beyond one’s primary field, learn about evolving scientific priorities, and gain insight into collaboration, leadership, mentoring, and career development.
Your Science in a Nutshell
Strengthen your ability to explain why your research matters. ORNL’s annual Your Science in a Nutshell competition provides early-career researchers with science communication training, one-on-one mentoring, and an opportunity to present a concise lightning talk to laboratory leaders and colleagues.
Throughout the year, ORPA organizes activities that help postdocs connect, contribute, and grow. Programs may include career discussions, networking events, volunteer opportunities, social gatherings, and conversations with laboratory leaders. Together, these experiences strengthen the postdoctoral community and give participants opportunities to practice leadership and service.
ORNL’s Early Career Development Program is a selective cohort experience that supports the growth of emerging talent across the laboratory. Participants build leadership skills, expand their understanding of ORNL’s mission and operations, and connect with senior leaders and peers through workshops, networking, mentoring, and laboratory visits. The program reflects ORNL’s commitment to preparing promising early-career staff for continued growth and leadership.
